Bowling Section FAQ

How long has the Bowling Section been going ?

The section has been going from the start when the Club opened in 1993. Prior to that it was established in 1898 at the old site !

How many Bowlers are there ?

Just over 100 split approx. 65 % men 35 % women.

What days do you play ?

With the club having 10 Teams the green is in use Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu and Fri evenings ,Wed and Friday afternoons.

Social Bowling and club competitions are played Sat and Sun.

What are the typical times of Play ?

The Veterans and Ladies play afternoons 1pm to 4pm. All the other teams play in evening Leagues 6:30pm to 9:30pm.

 If you just want a game can you still play ?

Any Member of the Club who wants to use the Green can do so. It is termed Social Bowling and is played Sat or Sunday afternoons. (see notice boards) There is a small charge, currently £9 per year for a Green Card.

 How do you join, who do you see ?

There is a registration evening in February when all the Bowlers register for team bowling or social bowling. New members can join at this meeting or alternatively they would need to contact the Bowls Secretary.

When is the Bowling Season ?

The Green is open for Social Bowling and Team practice for 7 months from April to October, league team bowling from April to September.

What happens out of Season ?

Winter bowling takes place on one of the local Park Greens. Quite a number of the Club’s Bowlers partake.

 Are there any non bowling social activities ?

There are two social evenings where bowlers can meet up. They are held in the evening and usually include a Buffet, Artist and Dancing. One in March the other is in October.

What are the various leagues called.

We compete in 7 Bowling Leagues, Altrincham and District L.V. League, Altrincham and South Manchester League, Sale and District League, Urmston and District Veterans League, Trafford Evening Mixed League, Altrincham and District Ladies League and Timperley and District Veterans League.

What Competitions are there , Internally and External ?

Internally the Club competes for 16 Club Trophies each Season. Externally the individuals Leagues organise team knock out competitions.

What Trophies are there ?

As well as the 16 Club Trophies the Club presents 7 cups each season to the Bowler with the best results from each individual League team over the Season.

Do you play outside of the Sale area ?

All out League matches are played locally within 5 - 6 miles of the Club. There are National Competitions but our Club does not enter.

How does the Home and Away work ?

Each League comprises of 2, 3 or 4 Divisions, made up on average of 12 to 14 Clubs. Clubs play each other on a home and away basis.

Do you have a Committee to run the Bowling Club ?

We have a committee, normally comprising of 6. My position is the Bowls Secretary.

Who looks after the Green ?

A Contractor carries out the maintenance work on the Green. We employ a Greensman to cut the grass. It is cut 3 times a week during the season, once a week or less during closed Season.
